James Reason’s new book!

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

A friend just alerted me of James Reason‘s new book “The Human Contribution– unsafe acts, accidents and heroic recoveries”.

His other book on organisational accident (“Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents“) is also a must read. It has a chapter on safety culture, which is very insightful.

Multi-cultural workforce

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Multi-cultural workforce is getting common due to globalisation. This problem occurs in Singapore, Australia and U.S. and many other countries. This poses a challenge for occupational health and safety management due to the complexity in comunication (multiple languages) and the differences in culture background.

Click here for a paper that discusses the problem in the Australia context.

Micro-businesses might have advantages in OSH management

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

I was analysing some accident data and my analysis seems to suggest that micro-businesses (less than 25 employees) might actually have better OSH performance (as represented in lagging indicators) than small and medium enterprises (25-200 employees). This may be due to the fact that top management of micro-businesses are usually directly involved in the operations and they can oversee matters directly. In addition such businesses are usually comparatively more manageable. Was told that there had been similar findings in earlier researches too.
